Seeking a Better Life: Entry into the United States
The United States continues to remain the country possessing the largest immigration population. As of 2019, the U.S. is home to approximately 44.9 million immigrants. Every year, the U.S. admits around one million immigrants. In 2021, nearly 740,000 people became lawful permanent residents of the U.S., and around 814,000 people became U.S. citizens through naturalization. These numbers do not factor in unlawful immigration. Some reports indicate that the current population of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. may be as high as 15,000,000. People immigrate to the U.S. for a variety of reasons. Arguably, the most common reason people seek to immigrate to the U.S. is for better work opportunities. The U.S. has a wide array of different jobs that are unavailable in other countries. Of course, better access to work opportunities can lead to an overall improvement in a person’s quality of life. Other reasons why people immigrate to the U.S. include the opportunity to get a better education and to gain access to proper medical services. After all, the U.S. is home to many prestigious universities and has state of the art medical technologies that distinguishes the nation from its counterparts. Another reason why people immigrate to the U.S. is to escape conflict from their country of origin. Unfortunately, country conditions abroad often create an environment that leads asylum seekers to flee and seek asylum in the U.S. Some countries may deprive some of their citizens of their basic human rights as recognized by international law. Other immigrants have been misplaced or forced to leave as a result of conflicts in their homelands. People choose the U.S. for its freedom and democracy, as well as protection from conflict they otherwise would still face if they remained in their homeland. After a person becomes a U.S. citizen, they have an expanded amount of rights to take advantage of. One advantage is that they are able to apply for a U.S. passport. With a U.S. passport, they are allowed to travel to many parts of the world with minimal issue. Another right is that they can register to vote and be a participating citizen in the democratic process.. They can even sponsor other family members to come to the U.S. through permanent residency, or aGreen Card. Other opportunities include being able to apply to federal jobs as well as applying for federal benefits such as health insurance.
