Former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli is reported to be the new Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Former Director of USCIS, Lee Francis Cissna, resigned on May 24, 2019. Cuccinelli has no prior experience with USCIS, something USCIS union president Danielle Spooner was quick to point out in a recent interview. In a public statement, the USCIS union leader stated, “It has become clear that the goal of this Administration is to end immigration all together. How better to do that then by appointing as the leader of USCIS someone who knows nothing about immigration, Adjustment of Status or Naturalization, and whose sole purpose is to destroy the agency that grants these benefits.” the statement read. “ Lee Francis Cissna held the position of USCIS director for 2 years, from 2017 to 2019. Cuccinelli has a track history of holding hardline positions on immigration. In 2010, Cuccinelli sponsored a state bill that would have required employees to speak English in the workplace. He also tried to end birthright citizenship and publicly praised state “show me your papers” laws. Cuccinelli still requires Senate confirmation, but he may be facing an uphill battle. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has stated his dislike of Cuccinelli, calling for President Trump to avoid nominating him for the USCIS position. Senate Democrats may vote against his confirmation, given his hardline stance on immigration.
