On April 4th, 2019, President Donald Trump seemingly pulled back on his decision to close the Mexico – U.S. border, indicating instead that Mexico must increase its migrant enforcement efforts. President Trump gave Mexico a “one year warning,” threatening tariffs if Mexico does not cooperate. He also urged Congress to take action to close “loopholes” in the current immigration laws. “You know I will do it,” Trump said. “I don’t play games.” The President stated that border security now takes priority over negotiating trade deals between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. President Trump’s new tone is different from that which he previously expressed. On March 29, President Trump threatened border closure if Mexico did not take action in stopping unlawful entries of migrants into the United States. President Trump insisted that the southern border would close, despite the trade issues that it would cause. In a tweet on March 29, President Trump stated that "[i]f Mexico doesn't immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States through our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING.....the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week,"
