U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration may implement new measures in preparation for an uptick in arrivals of Ukrainian refugees in the coming months. Since Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine in late February, an estimated 3 million refugees have fled the country. Many marked neighboring European countries as destinations for refuge, but advocates and rights groups continue to push for increased acceptance by the United States. According to new reports, the Biden administration plans to unveil a new plan to expedite intake of Ukrainian refugees, particularly journalists, activists and LGBTQ+ individuals, to the United States. The plan would speed up visa processing for relatives of U.S. citizens and permanent residents and delegate more staff to the task, according to a report. “The measures would be included under a series of efforts to help Ukrainians trying to get to the United States through existing legal immigration pathways,” the report said. Officials at the Biden administration believe Ukrainians will be inclined to return home or stay in Europe, so permanent measures to ensure their integration in the U.S. will not be necessary. Following calls to shield Ukrainian nationals in the country, The Biden administration designated Ukraine for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in early March, effectively protecting those currently residing in the U.S. as of March 1, 2022. Legislators and advocates continue to call on the Biden administration to do more to ensure the protection of Ukrainian refugees.
